Hey, pickleball enthusiasts and health-conscious warriors! Did you know that August 26th is not just another day on the calendar? It's National Cherry Popsicle Day! And there's no better way to celebrate than by diving deep into the juicy, refreshing, and invigorating world of cherries. Let's explore why cherries should be your go-to fruit both on and off the court.
The Cherry Power-Up
If you thought cherries were just for pies, think again. According to UDA Food Central and the Cleveland Clinic, cherries are loaded with incredible health benefits tailored for the active individual:
1. Muscle Recovery
Cherries are a rich source of anthocyanins, which are natural compounds that may reduce muscle soreness. After a rigorous pickleball match, cherries can be your best ally to alleviate those muscle aches.
2. Anti-Inflammatory
The same anthocyanins that aid in muscle recovery also have strong anti-inflammatory effects, reducing inflammation in the body which is crucial for all with an active lifestyle.
3. Sleep Regulation
If you're playing evening games and finding it hard to drift off after the match, cherries can be your sleep savior. They are a natural source of melatonin, which may help regulate sleep cycles.
4. Heart Health
Cherries are high in potassium, which is essential for heart health. So, not only do cherries help your muscles, but they also give your heart some love too!
5. Arthritis Relief
1 in 4 gout patients turn to cherries to lower the risk of gout flare-ups. Cherries can reduce uric acid levels, potentially bringing relief to painful joints. If you're an active individual suffering from arthritis or gout, incorporating cherries into your diet just might be a game-changer!
6. ... and much more!
From possibly reducing cancer risks to stabilizing blood sugar levels, cherries truly are a superfruit!
🍒Cherry-licious Pickleball Popsicle - Vegan Version 🍒
Ingredients:
2 cups fresh cherries (pitted and halved)
1 cup silken tofu
2 tbsp agave syrup or maple syrup, optional
Juice of half a lemon
A pinch of salt, optional
Instructions:
1. Press the Tofu: Before starting, press the silken tofu to remove excess water. To do this, wrap the tofu block in a clean kitchen towel or several layers of paper towels. Place a weight on top, such as a heavy skillet or plate with a can on top, and let it press for about 10-15minutes. This will help in achieving a creamier texture for the popsicles.
2. Blend cherries and the pressed silken tofu in a food process or until smooth.
3. Add in the agave or maple syrup, lemon juice, and a pinch of salt to the processor. Blend until well combined.
4. Pour the mixture into popsicle molds, and insert popsicle sticks.
5. Freeze for at least 4-6 hours or until solid.
6. Enjoy after a challenging game of pickleball or during a break for a refreshing energy and flavor boost!
The tofu can be swapped out for Greek yogurt and the agave nectar/maple syrup swapped out for honey both at a one-to-one ratio for a non-vegan recipe. Keep in mind that these swaps will change the nutritional content.
So, whether you're a pickleball pro, an amateur or recreational player looking to up your game, or just someone passionate about maintaining an active, healthy lifestyle, this National Cherry Popsicle Day, make sure you indulge in the cherry magic.
And remember, it's not just about the popsicle, it's about fueling your body in the tastiest way possible. Stay active, stay cherry-ful! 🍒🎉🏓 Live Well. Play Well. No Matter Your Game.
